3 WARNING SIGNS YOU HAVE PUT THE WRONG FUEL IN YOUR CAR

7/1/2019

Ok, so you have just been to the petrol station and in your usual mad rush between seeing to the kids, running errands or fighting the rush hour traffic in your daily commute, your car starts to do funny things and you're not quite sure about it. First thing, don't panic, get yourself to the side of the road and then think about the next 5 warning signs of wrong fuel or fuel contamination in your vehicle.

1. Car Jumping

If you have just left the forecourt and got down the road and your vehicle begins to jump suddenly, this is the number 1 warning sign you have just put the wrong fuel in your tank, this could be petrol in your diesel car or vice versa, but you will know if this happens.

Every time you accelerate it will feel like the car loses power and jolts backwards and forwards as the petrol sticks to the pistons and then acts as a solvent causing damage to the pumps and corroding the lubrication which in turn means you have metal on metal, this can cause long term damage, but not if you get it drained quickly. There are many parts of a diesel engine that is not compatible with petrol, these parts can also be damaged too.

2. Smokey Exhaust

One tell tale sign of a common mis-fuel is the smokey exhaust. If you notice your exhaust smoking heavily then stop the car right away and turn off the ignition. This can be the petrol heating with the diesel causing extreme heat and burning on the exhaust and you don't want to be forking out for a new exhaust!

3. Engine Misfires

Sometimes you will hear a big bang or maybe a few splutters depending on the type of vehicle you have. Most cars will misfire, so too will vans and bikes. Lorries and larger vehicles may jolt too as the pistons struggle to cope without lubricant. Again, stop the engine and seek emergency roadside help.

It's not all bad news....

The good news is that putting diesel in a petrol is far less serious than if you were to put petrol in diesel. You are unlikely to have done any permanent damage to your engine or fuel system. A full flush of the fuel lines and tank is essential to remove any contaminated fuel. Once this flush has been carried out and the vehicle has cleared the remaining residue diesel from the system, your car should run fine.

If you have just had a fuel drain, then we recommend that you change your fuel filter afterwards just as an extra precaution, but again, you should be fine as long as the fuel has been drained thoroughly and the engine flushed through too.

The plus side, your car will be ok, don't read the horror stories on forums about needing a new engine, or your car being written off, it's a simple fix.

What To Do When You Put Wrong Fuel In Your Car

11/29/2018

When reading articles on the internet about this, there are many many scare stories about how putting petrol in your diesel engine can ruin your car, how your engine will blow, how it will erode! Ignore them all and just read our article below to get the full low down on what to do when you have just mixed your petrol and diesel cars.

A motor vehicle is a finely tuned and handy machine. Many of us would be entirely lost without our vehicles, and it is easy to see why. Each and every car can transport at least two people from one place to the next without any issues at all.
after putting petrol in diesel car
However, the finely tuned machine can be susceptible to some major flaws and issues. The majority of these are just down to the nature of the car and how it progresses, but in some cases, it can be an accident on the part of the owner. We’re going to be taking a look at what you can do when you put the wrong kind of fuel in a car, and if there’s anything which can be done to change it.

Initial Reaction
When you first come to the realisation that you have put the wrong fuel into your vehicle, you need to make sure that you follow these golden rules to minimise the damage and prevent a problem from becoming a serious issue.

First of all, do not start the car. If you start your vehicle, you run the risk of the fuel contaminating your engine and damaging it beyond repair. You should take the keys away from the ignition. It’s then a case of making sure that you get the car to a safe location. If you’re at a petrol station, then you do at least have the advantage of asking someone to give you a hand pushing the vehicle. You want the car to get to somewhere where services can provide assistance to you without inconveniencing other people.

After this, you’re going to need to contact your breakdown provider or a roadside services provider. Explain the situation to them and tell them where you are. They’ll be able to come to you and provide aid, so you’ll need to sit tight and wait.
Two Fuel Types - Two Different Situations
Because there are two different types of fuel which can go into two different engines, there are two types of reactions which can take place within the vehicle when you try and use it.

Putting diesel in a petrol car is the least damaging occurrence of the two, but it is a real pain to get around. What you will notice is that the diesel pump nozzle is larger than the filler necks for petrol vehicles, so it’s much harder to put the wrong fuel in. However, it can still be a pain.
petrol and diesel pumps
Now, what you need to understand is that diesel and petrol are used in two different ways. As a fuel, they are utilised by the vehicles in different ways. Petrol is ignited, whereas diesel is compressed. What this means is that when you go to start the car, it just won’t do anything. It’s a significant pain to drain the fuel out and put more in, but it’s not going to wreck your engine completely.

Putting petrol into a diesel vehicle, however, is much more damaging and potentially fatal to your car. The mistake which a lot of people make is that the filler nozzle for petrol will fit into a diesel cap, so it is much easier to make the mistake of putting the wrong fuel in.

Diesel acts as a lubricant for the vehicle - it helps all of the different parts in the engine to work together. It also helps the fuel pump to perform its tasks with more ease. The problem with petrol is that it does the exact opposite. It jams up and causes friction between all of the different parts of the machine, which means that when you actually go and start up the engine, it will experience problems and issues which can cripple it.

How Do I Prevent Misfiling A Vehicle?
As you can probably tell, putting the wrong kind of fuel into your vehicle can be a major problem, and so many people really don't want it to happen to their car - a new engine is going to set you back a long way concerning price.

This means that people will need to make sure that they avoid putting the wrong fuel into your vehicle. While it is impossible never to make a mistake, trying to reduce them is crucial. You should always make an attempt to read the labels when using the pumps, which can happen more than you think.

You should also make sure that you avoid refuelling if you’re tired or in a rush where possible. These are the points where you are most likely to make a mistake, which can impact your whole day. It’s also possible to get a special attachment for your fuel cap if you drive a diesel vehicle, which will prevent you from inserting the wrong nozzle into your vehicle.

Overall, these are some of the different things which you can do to prevent the wrong fuel from being put into your vehicle. It’s not something that anyone wants to do, but you have to make sure that you are careful about how you go about putting fuel in.

Putting even the smallest amount of new fuel into the engine can potentially severely damage it. It’s important to understand that it can be easy to make a serious mistake. If you aren’t paying attention and you aren’t thinking, you can do some serious damage. The motor engine is a precise machine. Despite all of the grease and rough work which seems to go on inside garages, it’s actually a carefully maintained system which gives you the car we know and love. You have to be careful with fuel, because not only are you spending more money, but you’re also running the risk of damaging your engine beyond repair. That’s obviously something you want to avoid. It’s just a case of taking the time to look carefully into what you put into your machine and make the correct decision in regards to fuel.

Fuel Doctor Saves The Day (Or Should We Say Date)

2/23/2018

Well when love is in the air, you'll do anything to get to that special date, but in this case he was so excited he put the wrong fuel in his car in a texaco garage in Nottingham. Well it wasn't exactly him, it was his passenger that thought his car was petrol when it was infact diesel.

There was some good banter about it and they remain good friends. We drained 35 litres of contaminated fuel from the tank and flushed through the engine as well as adding some fuel medic and boosting the battery to get the vehicle moving again.

The main thing is that he managed to get back on the road and back on his date! Saved by Fuel Doctor

On Saturday 29th April we were called out to a customer that has mistakenly put petrol in her diesel car and had then tried to drive the car off the forecourt and realising her mistake straight away after a family recommendation called Fuel Doctor & was made aware that wrong fuel recovery is quite common place for motorists especially on the motorway networks.

"another company quoted £300 & a 2 1/2hr call out time which left her distressed and upset"

After speaking to our call centre in Sheffield, Fuel Doctor Dan was en route to help the stranded motorist and with her disabilities we had to ensure we were speedy and took care of everything for her. We were there within the hour and had drained and flushed the wrong fuel from her car, got her back on the road with a smile on her face.

She left Charnock Richard services and got on with her day with more pennies in her pocket and spent a third of the time waiting around.

The car managed to make it to his place of work so he was able to call us out and was in no danger on the roadside. We were with him within the hour and flushed the wrong fuel out of the car and replaced with 10 litres of diesel to get him back to the garage to fill up.

Mr Cox was so happy with our service, being in Wotton in such an isolated area, he was expecting to wait hours, but little did he know we have Fuel Doctors covering the whole of Gloucester and South Gloucester to help other motorists that put the wrong fuel in their cars.
